Neues Semester, neue Projekte! Wir haben abwechslungsreiche audiovisuelle Themen und diskutieren über Forschungsprojekte, klangbasierte ethnografische Forschung und autoethnografische experimentelle Dokumentarfilme. Unser Programm mit vier Sitzungen für die folgenden Monate ist:

Wissenschaft aufführen: Einige Bühnen und performative Installation des (Nicht-)Wissens
„Fragen der Wissensproduktion, des Laien-Expert*innen-Verhältnisses oder des Gegenwissens haben in den vergangenen Jahren in verschiedenen Formaten Eingang in die darstellenden Künste gefunden. Versammeln manche ganze Diskurse in ihrer Vielstimmigkeit, verfolgen wieder andere direkt aktivistische und politische Zielsetzungen. Zuletzt sind im Kontext künstlerischer wie auf Partizipation gerichteter Forschung performative und wissenschaftliche Settings einander zunehmend nähergekommen, so auch im wissensanthropologischen Forschungsprojekt „Realfiktion Klimarechnungshof“, das seit Anfang 2022 an der Universität Wien durchgeführt wird. Was aber leisten staging oder acting out für die Wissenschaft?

Diesen Fragen gehen die Kuratoren Herbert Justnik und Alexander Martos anhand einiger Beispiele nach. Im Projekt „Realfiktion Klimarechnungshof“ zeichnen sie für Regie und Dramaturgie der „pre-enactments“ – ebenso spekulativer wie performativer Installationen aus dem Futur II – verantwortlich.“ (Text: H.J. und A.M.)

„Den Ausgangspunkt der Präsentation bildet die fotografische Hinterlassenschaft des Pressefotografen Jovan Ritopečki (1923-1989) zur jugoslawischen Migration in Österreich.
Der Beitrag von Vida Bakondy möchte einen Einblick in den Forschungsprozess – das Sichten, Sortieren, Betrachten, Beforschen – ermöglichen, sowie methodische Fragen und Herausforderungen diskutieren.“ (Text und Bild: V.B.)

„Countryless and Queer“ (2020) Film Screening and Discussion // Volkskundemuseum
„The feature-length experimental documentary “Countryless and Queer ” by Masha Godovannaya captures traces of queer existence and intimate arrangements lived by non-privileged queers who navigate their experiences of migration in the city of Vienna.
The film unfolds narratives of five queer migrants from contexts outside of the Global North which have been marked by gender violence, homophobia, economic instability, and social misbalance. Beyond narratives of damage, marginality is lived through and treated in the film as a space for emancipation and resistance – full of humor and joy, dignity and erotic, emancipation and struggle.“ (Text and Image: M.G.)

Im diesjährigen Online-Semesterprogramm der Forschungsgruppe „penser l’urbain par l’image“ (PUI) des LABEX futursurbains, Université Gustave Eiffel (Paris) geht es um die Frage, wie die Flüchtigkeit der Welt mit Bildern umarmt werden kann. Einzelne Mitglieder des Kollektivs geben Einblick in ihre Forschung. 
Take your time and have a look at the video of the book presentation „L’urbain par l’image. Collaborations entre arts visuels et sciences sociales“, published with Créaphis Editions that took place at the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine in Paris, January 19. 2022. Photographers Hortense Soichet and Philippe Bazin presented their work in detail. We discussed the conditions and possible collaboration results between audio-visual artistic work and research in the humanities and social sciences. That night we – the research collectif „penser l’urbain par l’image“ (PUI) of LABEX futursurbains – were specifically interested to reflect the making of a our book with Créaphis. We have been invited by Aude Mathé who carefully curates the series „Cinéma et photographie, projection-débat“ that takes place in the wonderful auditorium of the Cité – the former cinémath`èque de Paris.
Our colleagues from the Stadtlabor for Multimodal Anthropology Institut für Europäische Ethnologie, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Tomás Sánchez Criado, Julia Schäfer, Nelson Wilhelm and Ignacio Farías have published a short video that contains main points of discussion from the workshop „Anthropology beyond text? Experiments, devices and platforms of multimodal ethnographic practice“ (22-23.7.2021). Have a look! And: We take up some of these interrogations in our semester program above.
„Listening to Italian Colonialism“ is a series of dialogues with researchers, artists and activists about the role of 1930s radio hits thematizing Ethiopia in Fascist Italy. The colonial imaginary produced and reproduced within this sonic memory, and the implications and heritage of that imaginary in the present day, are the central topics of the dialogues. You can watch the first three episodes here, the fourth is forthcoming.
We would like to create more space to reflect on and experimentally engage with some questions emerging from this project. This is why we opened a CfP for a special issue of the scholarly journal „From the European South“ titled „How Do We Listen to Colonialism? (Italy and Beyond).“ We see this special issue as a context to further expand the debate around sonic memory and colonialism and to explore new approaches to it. We are looking forward to receiving proposals for articles, reviews, interviews or creative interventions. You can find the call here. Technisches Museum Wien and the University of Vienna cordially invite you to the screening of eight short films produced by the students of the course ‚Visual ethnographies of science: Investigating knowledge production through media practice’. The public screening offers insights into the working procedures of different science institutions in Vienna, including laboratories, museums, and a university library.
The course ‘Visual ethnographies of science: Investigating knowledge production through media practice’ is a collaboration between the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology and the Department of Science and Technology Studies at the University of Vienna. It is taught by Sarah Davies and Sanderien Verstappen, with tutoring by Viktoria Paar, and facilitated by the Vienna Visual Anthropology Lab. During the course, Master students of both STS and Anthropology worked in interdisciplinary groups, applying ethnographic filmmaking in a research project about scientific knowledge production.
The screening will take place at the Festsaal of the Technisches Museum Wien, Tuesday 24 March, 16:00–17:30.
