Vienna Visual Anthropology Lab

VVAL opened its digital exhibition The Politics of (In)visibility on June 30.
This exhibition contains 17 experimental films that were created by Master students in anthropology, during the course “Ethnographic Media Practices: The Politics of (In)visibility” at the University of Vienna lead by Sanderien Vanderstappen. The films were produced in May/June 2020, during the pandemic. The assignment was to “express theory through film”, and to take theoretical inspiration from the course’s readings in visibility studies. While the films are highly diverse in form, they all reflect on patterns of visibility and invisibility – either by reflecting on the visual discourses surrounding the pandemic or by showing themes that were rendered invisible during the pandemic but remain important.

Publications

L’urbain par l’image: Collaborations entre arts visuels et sciences sociales“ (2020) edited by Cécile Cuny, Anne Jarrigeon & Alexa Färber with Créaphis Editions Paris sheds light on the multiple ways visual and urban research are informing each other and lead to genuine sometimes „un-disciplined“ publications. Contributors discuss ways of research and publication from the practical perspective of photographers and filmmakers, as well as the anthropology of knowledge, visual and urban anthropology, art and cultural studies. It is the result of the long-standing research network „Penser l’urbain par l’image“ (PUI), anchored at LABEX Futurs Urbains Université Gustave Eiffel, Paris-Est and the Institut of European Ethnology, University of Vienna.

The article „Ultrashort, low-resolution and anonymous: Designing anthropological films for smartphone viewers“(2020) by Sanderien Verstappen is now online on Entanglements Journal. Verstappen discusses the emergence of a new kind of film which meant to be viewed on a smartphone: low-resolution, ultrashort, and often anonymous. The distribution of these ultrashort videos has become a topic of concern in India, where they are discussed as a venue for promoting violence against minorities. In this experience, Verstappen considers the form of the smartphone film from the perspective of an anthropological filmmaker.
